Suggested Itinerary
The day-to-day locations and some sightseeing are already set and hotel accommodations will already be booked, but what you do during the day in each town or city is completely up to you. Below is a suggested itinerary of things to do and see so you can get the most out of your adventure. The beauty of this trip is that you can explore the country the way you want to. Just make sure to get to the hotel on time!
Day 1: Fly to Deer Lake – Rocky Harbour (70 km)
Arrive at Deer Lake. Pick-up car rental at the airport and head to Rocky Harbour in the Gros Morne National Park. Check-in at the hotel for 2 nights.
Hotel: Fisherman’s Landing or similar (2 nights)
Day 2: Rocky Harbour (B)
After breakfast, explore the national park at your leisure. Fun fact! Gros Morne is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Choose from over 100 kilometers of trails for hikers and walkers of all levels and interests. Walk along the famous Tablelands or take a visit to the Green Gardens where you’ll hike through a boreal forest. Its nice to end your day at the Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse, one of the best places in Gros Morne to watch whales, and see the sunset.
Day 3: Rocky Harbour – St Anthony (348 km) (B)
Drive to the tip of the Far North Peninsula, where you’ll get to explore the oldest European presence in America. Sailors from Greenland built a camp there more than 1,000 years ago, and you’ll be able to discover its cliffs, bogs, and rugged coasts for yourself.
Hotel: Haven Inn or similar (2 nights)
Day 4: St Anthony (B)
After breakfast at the hotel, make your way to Nordstead where you can experience Viking life for yourself, then embark on a cruise of the scenic coast where you’ll see icebergs, whales and dolphins galore.
- Included 2-hour Discovery Cruise Tour: Explore the scenic St. Anthony Coast, an area that typically has more icebergs, humpback whales and dolphins than any other region in Newfoundland. It’s a refreshing blend of nature, fun education and Newfoundland hospitality that you’ll never forget.
- Optional Activity ($): Learn about Viking life in Canada with a visit to Nordstead, a four-hectare living history site depicting daily life from 1,000 years ago. The site includes four period-style buildings, including a boathouse with its own life-size replica of a Viking ship.
Day 5: St-Anthony – Hawkes Bay or Cow Head (300 km) (B)
Leave the northern tip to walk along the west coast. Visit Port au Choix National Historic Site. Allow at least 2 hours to explore the area’s archaeological riches, rare plants and fossils, and coastal hiking trails.
Hotel: Shallow Bay Motel or similar (1 night)
- Optional Activity ($): Learn about the fascinating lifecycle of the Atlantic salmon, and how they migrate at the Torrent River Salmon Interpretation Centre and Fishway located in Hawkes Bay.
Day 6: Hawkes Bay or Cow Head – Deer Lake (115 km) (B)
Stop at Shallow Bay Beach. The soft, pale sand is perfect for a pleasant walk on the beach. It is protected from the waves by low rocky islands and the shallow water is perfect for swimming. Take advantage of this last day to discover other parts of Gros Morne National Park.
Hotel: Holiday Inn Express or similar (1 night)
- Optional Activity ($): Embark on a boat tour of the Western Brook Pond with Bon Tours. Admire the spectacular glacier-sculpted landlocked fjord, its waterfalls, and the billion-year-old cliffs. Plus, keep an eye out for any local wildlife! Note that a 3km walk is required between the parking lot and the dock.
