The Riverside Bach carries the name of the great German composer for good reason. There are – we can claim with all modesty – certain parallels in their characters. Bach was exceptionally welcoming to guests. Abstinence was not his thing; he valued quality food, tobacco, beer, and wine. Historians have praised his integrity and his sometimes humorous, jolly disposition. And all of these fine characteristics can also quite rightly be ascribed to the Riverside Bach. He was a real charmer. Poetry and charm characterise his works. His compositions were regarded at the time as the start of a “new form of music”, and the tours with the Riverside Debussy may also be understood as the dawn of a new era of river cruising on the Rhine.
